Conduttore (Tenant/Renter)

The term used in contracts for the lessee – the person who rents a property from a landlord (locatore). Also commonly referred to as inquilino in everyday language. The conduttore has the right to use the property as agreed in the contratto di locazione (lease agreement) and is obligated to pay rent and take care of the property. Italian law grants residential tenants certain protections: e.g., right to a minimum contract duration in standard leases and notice periods. The conduttore must return the property in the same condition (minus normal wear) at lease end. If the conduttore fails to pay rent or violates terms, the landlord can initiate sfratto (eviction) proceedings.
