Ecobonus (Eco-Bonus)

An incentive program providing tax deductions or credits for energy-efficient renovations. The Italian government (following EU directives) has periodically offered ecobonus schemes whereby a percentage of the costs for improving energy efficiency (insulation, new windows, solar panels, efficient boilers, etc.) can be deducted from taxes over multiple years. For instance, a 65% ecobonus was available for certain upgrades. There have also been transferable credits and invoice discounts introduced (allowing homeowners to transfer the bonus to contractors or banks for immediate benefit). These incentives make energy retrofits (like adding a cappotto termico – thermal insulation coat) financially attractive. The specifics (rates, eligible works, limits) change with annual budgets. Buyers of a property can sometimes benefit from a previous owner’s ecobonus if the credit was transferred with the property.
