Monolocale (Studio Apartment)

A one-room apartment, essentially a single living space that combines bedroom and living area (often with an open kitchenette), plus a separate bathroom. Monolocale literally means “one room”. It’s the smallest type of apartment and typically suitable for one person or a couple. By definition, a monolocale has one habitable room – for instance, a large room that serves as living and sleeping quarters – and does not have a distinct bedroom. The bathroom is separate (bathrooms aren’t counted in the locale count). In Italy, many monolocali are around 30–40 square meters. They are common in city centers as pied-à-terre or for students/young professionals. Rental yields on monolocali can be high relative to their size, but financing can be trickier if extremely small (banks sometimes prefer >25-30 m²).
