Salone Doppio (Double Living Room)

A large living area created by combining two rooms into one or that can be ideally divided into two sections. Common in descriptions of mid-20th-century apartments, a salone doppio implies a very spacious living room, often with two distinct zones (e.g., sitting area and dining area) possibly originally separated by a wall or large doorway now removed. It might have double windows or double doorways. Essentially, it’s bigger than a standard living room – roughly the size of two rooms. Sometimes floor plans label it as such. For example, an apartment listing might say “ingresso, salone doppio, 2 camere…” meaning it has an entry, a double-sized lounge, and 2 bedrooms. If needed, a salone doppio can be re-partitioned to create an extra bedroom or study. It’s considered a plus for entertainment space. Note it counts typically as two vani (rooms) in cadastral calculations if large enough, which can affect millesimi and taxes.
