The energy efficiency rating of a building, assigned in the Attestato di Prestazione Energetica (APE). Classes range from A4 (most efficient, green) down to G (least efficient) based on standardized calculations of energy consumption (for heating, cooling, hot water) per square meter. For example, a Class A building might have solar panels and thick insulation, while a Class G building is poorly insulated. The class must be included in property listings. Higher classes can command better prices or rents, and some new buildings are required to meet certain class standards. Italy and EU aim to improve energy classes over time (with incentives like Ecobonus for upgrades). The APE document will clearly state the class; buyers often consider it for estimating future utility costs.
