Residenza (Residence)

The place where a person has his or her habitual abode, formally registered with the Comune. One’s residenza anagrafica (registered residence) is important for tax and legal purposes. For example, prima casa benefits often require the buyer to establish residenza in the municipality of the new home within 18 months. Having residenza in a property also usually exempts it from IMU tax (if it’s your main home). When you change residenza, you file with the local civil registry; the police may verify you actually live there. Residenza ties to where you vote, what health services you access, and car registration. In real estate transactions, your ID and certificato di residenza may be required to determine tax treatment (first vs second home). It’s possible to have domicile elsewhere (say you work in a different city) but for legal matters like notifications, if not specified, documents go to your registered residenza. Non-EU citizens often need to show they have suitable housing when applying for residency. Also note, abitazione principale for tax (main dwelling) is slightly different – it’s where you and family actually live most of the time, which normally coincides with residenza, but in rare cases can differ (the law usually requires residenza to claim main-home benefits).
